Interoception - what is it?

Interocpetion - the 8th bodily sense.

Interoception is the sense of the body's internal state. It involves the ability to detect and interpret signals from within the body, including signals related to hunger, thirst, pain, temperature, heart rate, and breathing. Interoception is important for maintaining homeostasis, or the body's balance, by allowing us to regulate our bodily functions and respond to changes in our environment.

3. Mindfulness: This involves the practice of mindful awareness, which can help individuals learn to pay closer attention to their internal sensations and improve interoception.

4. Cognitive-behavioral strategies: This involves the use of cognitive strategies to help individuals understand and manage their internal sensations.

For example, an individual can learn how to attribute meaning to their internal sensations, such as feeling hot or cold, tired, or hungry to increase interoceptive awareness. An occupational therapist can work with individuals of all ages to help them develop greater interoceptive awareness and improve their ability to self-regulate and participate in daily activities. By identifying the individual's unique needs and goals, occupational therapists can develop individualized treatment plans and interventions to improve interoceptive functioning.
